Design and Portability

The Jackery Explorer 500 is an easy power pack to take with you on the go. Its sturdy, compact casing includes a built-in top handle with a comfortable grip and effectively protects the inner workings during outdoor use. At just over 13 pounds, it’s light enough to carry one-handed and won’t add too much bulk to your gear for wilderness camping and other longer excursions.

Along with portability, the Jackery Explorer 500 gets high marks for ease of use. All the connection ports are on the front panel, and are clearly labeled and well laid-out, with plenty of space between ports to plug in up to 7 devices simultaneously. We also appreciate the detailed digital display, which tells you how many watts are going in and out along with showing the remaining charge. The built-in flashlight on the side is a nice touch, too, especially for emergency preparedness.

Capacity and Power

The lithium-ion battery in the Explorer 500 has a capacity of 518 watt hours (Wh). For context, that’s enough to run a 60-watt device for around 8-9 hours, or to recharge a smartphone 50 times or more, before you’ll need to recharge the power station.

The maximum output of the Jackery Explorer 500 is similar to its capacity, at 500 continuous watts (1,000 peak watts). In other words, the total wattage of all devices plugged into it at once can be up to 500 watts. That’s a bit low for heavy-duty tools or appliances, like full-sized refrigerators but is enough for the majority of travel-sized equivalents (it will run a mini-fridge or portable cooler, for example).

Pros

  • Compact, super-portable build
  • Excellent power to weight ratio
  • Integrated battery management system
  • 3 recharging methods (solar panel, wall outlet, car port)
  • Powerful enough to run kitchen appliances
  • Built-in flashlight

Cons

  • Long solar panel recharging time
  • Not capable of powering heavy-duty tools and appliances

Recharging

The Jackery Explorer 500 comes with an AC adapter and car charging cable included. Using these, you can recharge it in around 5-6 hours, which is on par with similarly-sized portable power stations.

There’s also an MPPT controller integrated into the Explorer 500, which means it can be recharged using a solar panel array. Bear in mind it doesn’t come with a solar panel, something to consider especially if you’re on a tight budget. It also takes a bit longer to recharge through solar arrays—from empty to 80% capacity will take around 7-9 hours, depending on sun conditions and the panel you’re using.

Longevity and Durability

Jackery 500

The battery in the Explorer 500 has a relatively long lifecycle, and will maintain its full maximum capacity through hundreds of recharges. Its advanced battery management system definitely helps here, controlling each battery cell individually to maximize its lifespan.

The integrated BMS isn’t the only protection measure installed in the Jackery Explorer 500. Its cooling fan is very effective at maintaining a proper temperature, even on warm summer days, and isn’t so loud as to be intrusive. There are also safeguards against over-charging, over-discharge, and short-circuits to help safeguard the maximum lifespan and health of the battery.

Jackery Explorer 500 Review In Summary

The Jackery Explorer 500 is the Goldilocks of portable power stations. It’s small enough you can carry it with you but has a large enough capacity to power and recharge the majority of devices—basically, most buyers will find it’s just right. It’s also an excellent value at the price and a smart long-term investment thanks to its high durability. If you’re looking for reliable power around the home or on the go, the Explorer 500 is an excellent option.  (>>> Check on Amazon)
